Your Time & Talents!

As we wrap up this month of exploring generosity, I invite each of us to be inspired by the profound lessons we’ve absorbed. Let’s channel this inspiration into tangible actions by generously giving our time and talents. Embracing the principles of “creative altruism” advocated by Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and aligning with the theme “Love Is at the Center,” let us contribute meaningfully to our community and embody the spirit of service that defines our shared values

I am reaching out to ask you to consider offering your time and talents to support our community at First Unitarian Portland. We have a variety of volunteer opportunities available, from radically and intentionally hospitable roles to tasks that require newsletter and communication skills, technical skills, and general office administration skills. Additionally, we welcome your involvement in our learning community through assisting our regular Sunday classes or offering to facilitate ongoing adult groups. There is an additional need to help with the many social justice opportunities. Your support is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

I was not raised in a church; however, I did have exposure to different youth groups and, through my cousins and friends, several different experiences in a church setting. My husband was raised in a church setting throughout his entire young life, and although he did not ascribe to the doctrine of the church he was raised in as an adult father, he did feel the call of finding a supportive community and recalled with love and fondness his experiences of connection. We wanted that for our daughter, and that brought us to the Unitarian Church. My first volunteer experience was helping in the religious education classes, which led to teaching RE on Sunday morning and then directing and growing the program as a staff member. It so enriched my life. I found some of my closest friends (to this day) in the church, grew as an individual, and developed a sense of belonging. Working on auctions, greeting on Sunday mornings, attending rallies for social justice, and showing up for community gardening days. Taking food to the bereaved, the sick, and those welcoming new babies. The list goes on and on. I was called to give of my time and talents and have no regrets and I received back tenfold of what I gave.

Belonging and contributing to First Unitarian Portland is a lifelong process, and you can jump in at any time! By offering your time and talents, you not only support the growth and mission of First Unitarian, but you also enrich your congregational life. Together, we find joy, purpose, belonging, and friendship. New folks and long-time members and friends of every age are welcome, and we are truly grateful for the contributions of each and every one of you. Your involvement is what keeps us going, keeps us inspired and on track for our future.

Please consider giving your time and talents – it truly makes a difference. I look forward to welcoming you to a new and purposeful role. Please use the link below to connect.
