Messe De Requiem
Music: Camille Saint-Saëns
Text: Traditional

Requiem – Kyrie
Requiem aeternam
dona eis, Domine,
et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Te decet hymnus, Deus in Sion,
et tibi reddetur
votum in Jerusalem;
ad te omnis caro veniet.

Kyrie, eleison.
Christe, eleison.
Kyrie, eleison.

TRANSLATION:
Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion,
and to thee a vow shall be fulfilled in Jerusalem.
For unto thee all flesh shall come.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy
.

Dies Irae
Dies irae, dies illa
solvet saeclum in favilla,
teste David cum Sibylla.

Quantus tremor est futurus,
quando iudex est venturus,
cuncta stricte discussurus?

Tuba mirum spargens sonum,
per sepulchra regionum,
coget omnes ante thronum.

Mors stupebit et natura,
cum resurget creatura,
iudicanti responsura.

Liber scriptus proferetur
in quo totum continetur,
unde mundus iudicetur.

Iudex ergo cum sedebit,
quidquid latet, apparebit;
nil inultum remanebit.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?
Quem patronum rogaturus,
cum vix iustus sit securus?

TRANSLATION:
A day of wrath; that day,
it will dissolve the world into glowing ashes,
as attested by David together with the Sibyl.

What trembling will there be,
when the Judge shall come
to examine everything in strict justice.

The trumpet’s wondrous call sounding abroad
in tombs throughout the world
shall drive everybody forward to the throne.

Death and nature shall stand amazed
when creation rises again
to give answer to its Judge.

A written book will be brought forth
in which everything is contained
from which the world shall be judged.

So when the Judge is seated,
whatever is hidden will be made known:
nothing shall go unpunished.

What shall I, wretch, say at that time?
What advocate shall I entreat (to plead for me)
when scarcely the righteous shall be safe from damnation?

Rex Tremendae
Rex tremendae majestatis
qui salvandos salvas gratis,
salva me fons pietatis

Recordare, Jesu pie,
quod sum causa tuae viae;
ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me, sedisti lassus,
redemisti crucem passus;
tantus labor non sit cassus.

Juste judex ultionis,
donum fac remissionis
ante diem rationis.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus:
culpa rubet vultus meus;
supplicanti parce, Deus.

Qui Mariam absolvisti,
et latronem exaudisti,
mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Preces meae non sunt dignae,
sed tu, bonus, fac benigne,
ne perenni cremer igne.

Inter oves locum praesta,
Et ab haedis me sequestra,
Statuens in parte dextra.

Confutatis maledictis,
Flammis acribus addictis:
Voca me cum benedictis.

TRANSLATION:
King of awful majesty,
who freely saves those worthy of salvation,
save me, fount of mercy.

Remember, gentle Jesus,
that I am the reason for your earthly life,
do not cast me out on that day.

Seeking me, you sank down wearily,
you have saved me by enduring the cross:
such travail must not be in vain.

Righteous Judge of vengeance,
award the gift of forgiveness
before the day of reckoning.

I groan, like the sinner that ?I am,
guilt reddens my face:
spare the supplicant, O God.

You, who pardoned Mary
and heeded the thief,
have given me hope as well.

My prayers are unworthy,
but you, who are good, in pity,
do not let me burn in the eternal fire.

Give me a place among the sheep
and separate me from the goats,
let me stand at your right hand.

When the damned are cast away,
and consigned to the searing flames,
call me to be with the blessed.

Oro Supplex
Oro supplex et acclinis,
cor contritum quasi cinis:
gere curam mei finis
.

Lacrimosa dies illa,
qua resurget ex favilla.
iudicandus homo reus:
huic ergo parce Deus

Pie Iesu Domine,
dona eis requiem. Amen

TRANSLATION:
Bowed down in supplication I beg you,
my heart as though ground to ashes,
help me in my final hour.

This day of tears
when from the ashes arises
guilty man to be judged:
have mercy upon him, O Lord,

Gentle Lord Jesus,
grant him rest.
Amen.

Hostias
Hostias et preces tibi,
Domine, laudis offerimus.
Tu suscipe pro animabus illis
quarum hodie memoriam facimus.

Fac eas, Domine,
de morte transire ad vitam,
quam olim Abrahae promisisti
et semini eius.

TRANSLATION:
Sacrifices and prayers to Thee,
O Lord, we offer with praise.
O receive them for the souls of those
whom today we commemorate.

Make them, O Lord,
to pass from death to life,
which of old Thou didst promise Abraham
and his seed.

Sanctus
Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus,
Dominus Deus Sabaoth.
Pleni sunt caeli et terra gloria tua.
Hosanna in excelsis.

TRANSLATION:
Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God of hosts.
Heaven and earth are full of Thy glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Benedictus
Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.

TRANSLATION:
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.

Agnus Dei
Agnus Dei,
qui tollis peccata mundi,
Dona eis requiem,
Sempiternam,
Lux aeterna luceat eis,
Cum sanctis tuis in aeternum,
quia pius es.
Amen.

TRANSLATION:
Lamb of God,
Who takes away the sins of the world,
Give them rest,
Everlasting,

May light eternal shine upon them,
With Thy saints forever,
for Thou art kind.

Amen.
