Nov./Dec.: Poppy Dully

The Garden

Poppy Dully’s artistic practices span painting, printmaking, and artist books. Her recent work features copper etched botanical prints created over the past two years. She is attracted to plants and flowers that she finds in gardens and forests around Portland. Working from drawings, she develops these images in copper plates which are etched, proofed, aquatinted, stopped-out, and etched again until the plates are ready to edition. Poppy plays with ink colors, moving from the traditional to the unusual. Keen observation is important in her choice of subject matter. Nature is uninhibited in its array of colors and patterns. Poppy wants us to consider what we recognize and what may be possible. There is a sense of freedom in the juxtaposition of color and composition. The etching process requires planning, preparation and always elements of surprise. Poppy has a home studio and enjoys the community of printmakers in Print Arts Northwest and at the Ray Trayle Print Studio at the Multnomah Arts Center. Poppy just completed an artist print residency at Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Art and Agriculture and Studio 6000 in Sisters, Oregon.
