Karen Shawcross, M.A.

As poet Mary Oliver asks: “What will you do with your one wild and crazy life?” This can be a hard question to answer on your own. As a spiritual companion, I hope to help you discern meaning in your life and ponder life’s deepest questions. I will create a sacred space between us to listen deeply, to bring out your inner wisdom, and to discern with you the holy in your life.

We will walk together on a journey of spiritual growth and deepening. If you have a desire to integrate spirituality into your daily life, are in a season of discernment, face a growing edge, want a clearer sense of calling, want to seek the holy in the joys and struggles of life, develop a spiritual practice, prepare for the end of life – these are all possible within my spiritual companionship.

In this safe and confidential space I will join in your story as a soul listener, and – whatever your beliefs, your name for the divine or holy – to explore your life experience and help bring words for what lies implicit or dormant at the ground of your being. In the presence of a receptive, non -judgmental spiritual companion we can bring truth into the light of awareness and discover meaning for our lives.

I join you as a spiritual traveler and will bring elder wisdom to our time together. We will use your life stories, experiences, wonderings and challenges to explore who you are in your most authentic deeper self, and your connection to something beyond ego and personality. Raised in the Episcopal tradition, I have been a Unitarian Universalist for 50 years. I bring to our work my experience as a lay minister, spiritual director, Wellspring facilitator. I have a Master’s degree in psychological counseling and experience as a therapist. I am also a certified Enneagram Coach and a certified End-of-Life Doula. My spiritual direction training was at Urban Spirituality Center and I have been in private practice since 2017. I am a member of Spiritual Directors International and Unitarian Universalist Spiritual Directors Network.

Our time together will always include deep listening and quiet questions, but I may also offer support for your spiritual practice and wonderings with guided meditations, lectio divina, visio divina, prayer, poetry and music. I would like to be your soul-listener, your anam cara.

In these troubled times for the world and our planet, times of struggle, injustice, war, and division, a spiritual journey can be a very lonely task. I would love to talk with you about this work, and I wish you many blessings on your spiritual journey.
