In these days that can feel dark and stormy, it’s a joy to come together and celebrate the vibrant life of our community. On April 6, 2025, First Unitarian Portland will celebrate our members and welcome new folks to membership in the church in the Sunday service. It is a moment to shine a light on the deeper connections that membership brings and remember what it means. As Rev. Alison reminded us in her January column, membership is more than a formal commitment and more than just signing the book—it’s about embracing our shared humanity and fostering meaningful relationships.
I am in awe of the network of lives that make up our congregation—a tapestry of diverse experiences, perspectives, and gifts. From folks raised in this very church to adults discovering Unitarian Universalism for the first time, and from lifelong members to those with roots in other UU congregations or faith traditions, each person brings a unique thread that weaves our community together. This beautiful web of connections is the tie that binds us, a testament to the power of shared values and shared purpose.
Membership calls us into deeper engagement—working side by side to teach children, organize projects, or raise funds and to comfort one another. We’ve shared soup together, raised our voices in music and song, cleaned and gardened and worked to live out our shared values in the world. These connections remind us that we are not alone but part of something larger—a community grounded in love and mutual care.
As we celebrate the new members and hold up what membership means at First Unitarian Portland, this moment offers a unique opportunity for all of us to re-covenant and reflect on your own membership journey. It’s a chance to recommit to the values and principles that guide our community. By doing so, you not only strengthen your individual commitment but also deepen our collective bond, fostering a stronger and more resilient community.
If you want to learn more about the church, consider attending one of the First Steps classes, which typically take place on the first Sunday of each month. In fact, the next class is scheduled for April 6, following the service. This is a great way to meet church leaders and gain a deeper understanding of our community.
And, If you find yourself ready to take the next step and join First Unitarian Portland in membership, you can contact Jen Thomas or make an appointment with Rev. Alison using Calendly.
At its heart, membership at First Unitarian Portland is about connection—to one another, to our values, and to the transformative power of love that guides us forward. Join us as we celebrate the evolving spirit of our congregation and the shared journey that unites us all.
Yours on the journey,
Jen Thomas
