First U PDX’s UUJME on the 9/23 Attacks in Lebanon

The blowing up of pagers and walkie talkies in Lebanon that killed 41 people and injured 30,000 has introduced a new method of terrorism into the world and all of us who use communication devices have become more fearful. Dennis Kucinich has expressed this well.

An attack on a potential enemy’s communication system is an act of war and we all wonder what the response of Hezbollah will be. Will this be the red line that is crossed on the path to a wide conflagration? As American citizens we are complicit in the war on Gaza and the war that may come and must do what we can to stop both the war in Gaza and a war that may come.  Jonathan Kuttab, Director of Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA), and Mark Braverman, Director of Kairos USA, discuss what members of churches are called to do here.

UUs need to join in this effort, and it is good to know that many UUs have already done so. The UUA General Assembly passed a statement of solidarity with Palestinians this past June. And since then Diverse Revolutionary Unitarian Universalist Multicultural Ministries (DRUUMM) has sponsored a monthly series of vigils for UUs to reflect on and act in solidarity with Palestinians. These videos are available on Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/@DRUUMM. The next one will be October 6 at 8 PM EDT. You can learn more about this vigil and register for it on the DRUUMM website.

It is most important to note that the vigils are sponsored not only by DRUUMM, but also by a broad range of UU organizations including Concerned Unitarian Universalist Ministers, Religious Professionals and, Lay Leaders; Black Lives of UU; Side with Love; UU Service Committee; UUs for Justice in the Middle East; UU Society for Community Ministries; and UU Women’s Federation.
